Patrolled By Radar

June 3, 2017

You can trace an almost linear route from the unfiltered moments of Dylan and The Hawks through Gram Parsons, to Tom Petty (with a slight detour along the way for chunks of the Rolling Stones circa 1969-72 and a speedbump called 'Tom Waits in the '90s'). The latest extension of this musical highway is paved by Patrolled By Radar, helmed by Jay Souza - vocals/guitar, Bosco Sheff - guitar/vocals, Ben Johnsen - drums/vocals. With a sound described as Mope-Rock or Grave-Wave, Bobby Moynahan manuvers the morose corners of the post-punk 80's with grand melodies. Supported by long-time friends and members, bassist Esli Sugich and expansive synths and guitars from Scott Eton, the guys have accumulated a wealth of material; dating from 2010. The other three fourths of Ramonda Hammer - Andy Hengl, Justin Geter, and Danny Louangxay - turn Davis’ songs into fully flourished anthems! The band's debut album came out in April 2016. It’s called Whatever That Means, which is not only a playful nod to everyone who’s puzzled by the band’s name, but is a lyric from a track on the album.

So Many Wizards

September 20, 2014

So Many Wizards, a dynamic four piece from Los Angeles, has been causing a stir with furious live performances and a sound that Aquarium Drunkard describes as an “enigmatic blend of pop, rock, ballads, and zany nuggets” that come together to form “a cohesive whole.” The band started as the solo project of Nima Kazerouni, who crafted the first So Many Wizards songs to cope with his anxiety after a childhood that began with an escape from war-torn Iran and took him through Europe, South America, and a month in the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica before landing him in LA.

Wayfarer

August 23, 2014

Like many, Nik Piscitello started screaming in his parents’ garage, lost in the ennui and youthful hopefulness so often found in the Southern California suburbs. In his early 20s, he performed in a group called Spark Of Life.

After two more attempts he created a new band Wayfarer, but it wasn’t really a band at all. A portrait of a man very much trying to come to grips with adulthood, armed with little more than his heart and his songs.

Influences: Jeff Tweedy, Mark Kozelek, Jeremy Enigk, Elliott Smith

Decorator

June 21, 2014

The term DECORATOR has officially been redefined, though Merriam Webster may not accept the new entry. DECORATOR – an infectious alt-rock band that sounds like the metaphorical equivalent of a triple layer cake made from equal parts Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, and GORILLAZ. In what started as a middle school cover band (think The Beatles and The Doors) for brothers Alix, Miles and Reece Melendrez, the growing urge for the guys to do their own thing became impossible to ignore.

Influences: Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, The Strokes, My Morning Jacket, Wu-Tang Clan

Wing & Hollow

Wing and hollow is comprised of Haven and Jill Lamoureux, an indie-folk duo joined in heart and song. Haven’s roving guitar play accompanies Jill’s soulful vocals to create an eerie and haunting atmosphere. The band’s inspiration stems from their love for folk and rock of the 60’s and 70’s.

The duo's first EP “Frozen Trees,” is a melancholy love letter to those influences. The album walks the icy byroads of lost love, dreams deferred and isolationism and it turns onto the springtime main street of spiritual rebirth. It captivates and consoles, elevates and emboldens.

Echoes de Luxe

For those who miss the era of rock where music had bravado and albums had artwork, we present to you...hope. Echoes de Luxe have a sound and spirit that embodies 70's era rock bred with the sonic experimentation of today. Echoes de Luxe released their debut EP in March of 2009. Mixed by Alex Newport (Jubilee, Mars Volta), and mastered by Pete Lyman (Mars Volta, Death Cab for Cutie), the 5 songs won them an early champion in Jane's Addiction guitarist, Dave Navarro. Glen Iris

The band Glen Iris first formed when Debbie Miller met Stephen Marr in the summer of 2007. Debbie, a talented singer and lyricist, had just returned from a semester abroad at Oxford studying poetry. Steve, a gifted guitar and piano player with a keen ear for catchy melodies and unique chord progressions, had been looking for a writing partner to contribute lyrics to his upbeat, playful compositions. They turned out to be a perfect match. Soon they were not only collaborating on songs together, but also happily married. They spent the next couple years working on new material and perfecting their sound.

Leftover Cuties

To call Leftover Cuties retro or throwback would be too easy, and frankly dismissive. Sure, the music fits beside Billie Holiday, but it’s also current in its sex appeal, its sophistication, its confidence. The Cuties’ music – plied with upright bass, accordion, the brushed drums, and yes, ukulele – is not slavishly old-timey, but honors its forebears in the right way. Melody. Sharp playing. Stylized, confident, character-laden singing.

Well known as the band behind the theme song for The Big C, Leftover Cuties have also made a name for themselves playing shows around their hometown of Los Angeles. With two EPs and an album under their belt, the band will be releasing their next full length album this year, and continuing to captivate audiences around the world.

London Cries

The sound can be described as anthemic, melodic rock with a grunge edge. Their acoustic shows are littered with harmonies and singalong moments.

Neon Hymns

The eponymous EP from LA based alternative rock band Neon Hymns is a strong and confident debut from a band teeming with youthful aspiration. Unafraid to wear their hearts (and influences) on their sleeves, Neon Hymns play a personal brand of folk infused rock with a true sense of honesty and conviction often lacking among their modern rock peers. Neon Hymns is a band poised to carve out their own place in todays sonic landscape. With a live show to match and at times surpasses their recorded output, Neon Hymns plays with all the youthful potential that separates the good from the great.

Taylor Locke & The Roughs

Though formed in San Francisco, the band currently resides and works in Los Angeles alongside an awesome community of supportive individuals, artists, and brands.

The Peach Kings draw their sound and inspiration from the smoky smooth crackle of blues, folk, and soul vinyls as well as the hypodermic tones synthesized in various beat laboratories across the globe. Stripped down, The Peach Kings' power is derived from Paige's hauntingly sensual vocals combine with Steven's complementary rhythm and picking.
